Man City planning Etihad stadium expansion and fans all have the same joke

Manchester City are exploring expanding the Etihad Stadium – so that it can house more than 60,000 spectators.

City announced they are launching the feasibility of expanding the stadium on Monday morning, adding: "Fans and the local community will be invited to share their priorities." Concepts will be drawn up in early 2023 for fans to vote on.

The expansion will take place in the North Stand, while improvements will also be made to City Square. However, football fans have all made the same joke about the 'Emptyhad' after hearing of the proposed expansion of the stadium.

One fan joked: "Is the extension for when Ed Sheeran plays there cause it can’t be for the home fans who can’t fill it now unless they’re planning more free tickets for every school child again!"

"Should look at filling the seats they have now rather than pretending they need more," a second added. And a third simply tweeted: "Do they need any more empty seats?"

And a fourth added: "Surely they want to start selling out the current capacity on a regular basis before expanding it further? Unless it's aimed at the concertgoers?"

The Etihad was last expanded in 2015, when a third tier was added to the South Stand.

The increased capacity after the expansion went to the current 53,400 – which ranks it as the fifth largest stadium in the Premier League.
