Man City hero De Jong deletes tweet after Ronaldo transfer embarrassment
Former Manchester City player Nigel De Jong has been left with egg on his face after tweeting that Cristiano Ronaldo was joining his ex-club just hours before it was announced that he had signed for Manchester United.
In fairness to the Dutch international, Ronaldo moving to City looked a certainty.
The Portuguese international was in talks with Pep Guardiola’s side and if they were willing to pay the £20m transfer fee, he would be the striker that they have been after all summer.
However, when United entered the race for Ronaldo on Thursday night, slowly but surely throughout the following 24hrs the balance tipped in United’s favour; the fairy-tale ending of the Portugal captain’s career where he would return to the club where he became a star came true.
On Friday evening the Red Devils announced that Ronaldo had agreed on a two-year deal with his former club.
But just under four-and-a-half hours prior to that news, De Jong posted on his Twitter account: “CR7 to @ManCity, Announce it already!”
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and now, knowing what we all know, the tweet is hilarious.
Thankfully, the former AC Milan midfielder saw the funny side of his premature celebrations, he deleted the original post and pinned the following tweet to his profile.
“Well that escalated quick! Tried to take the shine away from @rioferdy5 (Rio Ferdinand) but he knew better! It’s called the “Fergie effect”. Take this L and move on! When finalized, good to see Ronaldo back in the premier league again!"
Will Cristiano Ronaldo be a success at Manchester United? Comment below.
De Jong spent three years at City between 2009 and 2012, he made 104 league appearances and helped them to a victory in the FA Cup and their first Premier League title in 2011/12.
United then regained the title the following season but haven’t got their hands on the trophy since.
Now with Ronaldo, they have every chance. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has recruited well over the window and strengthened in key areas, and if they aren’t competitive then he may well be shown the door.
Many thought that United’s investment this summer would be in the midfield, but the Norwegian boss prioritised bringing in a defensive partner for captain Harry Maguire and a natural right-winger, putting his faith in Fred, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba (if he moves him back off of the left-wing).
The signings of Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) and Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) put the Red Devils in a great position to push on this season, especially with CR7 leading the line – although he may not be said nickname anymore as Edinson Cavani currently occupies that number at Old Trafford.
