Man City consider a move for German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from relegated Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer to replace Zack Steffen as Ederson’s No 2

  • Stefan Ortega is available from Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer this summer
  • Zack Steffen wants more first-team football next season ahead of the World Cup
  • The USA international’s blunder led to City’s loss in the FA Cup semi-final
  • Pep Guardiola is eyeing up Ortega if Steffen does leave the Etihad this summer

Manchester City are considering a move for German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to replace Zack Steffen as Ederson’s No 2 at the Etihad.

USA international Steffen wants more first-team football next season to ensure he is first-choice for the World Cup in November when he is set to face England in Group B.

There have also been doubts about the 27-year-old’s future at City since his blunder contributed to a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final in April.

It was the last of his nine appearances with Pep Guardiola choosing to play Ederson in the majority of games last season.

Steffen’s contract at the Etihad is set to expire in June 2025 but he could be heading towards the exit sooner.

If Steffen leaves this summer, City have lined up Ortega who is available from Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old was unable to prevent Arminia being relegated from the Bundesliga last season, conceding 53 goals in 33 games and keeping just six clean sheets.

Ortega was on standby for Germany’s Euro 2020 squad and has been previously linked with a move to Bayern Munich as a back-up to Manuel Neuer, according to Goal.

Meanwhile, City recently sold Gavin Bazunu, who spent the previous two seasons on loan in League One and failed to make a first-team appearance, to Southampton for £12million.

But current third-choice keeper Scott Carson has already signed a new 12-month contract to remain at Etihad Stadium.
