Lukaku 'set to miss this weekend's Milan derby' with thigh injury

Inter Milan are handed a massive setback with Romelu Lukaku ‘set to miss this weekend’s Milan derby’ with a thigh injury… with Belgium star now in a race against time to play for his country next month

  • Inter Milan confirmed Romelu Lukaku had suffered a thigh injury on Monday
  • The 29-year-old will therefore miss Wednesday’s game against Cremonese
  • But a host of Italian outlets claim he could be out until the start of October
  • Lukaku is set to miss high-profile matches against AC Milan and Bayern Munich

Romelu Lukaku is reportedly set to miss Inter Milan’s crucial derby against AC Milan this weekend due to a thigh injury.

Inter confirmed on Monday the 29-year-old striker suffered a left thigh strain in training on Sunday morning, his first injury since returning to the club on loan from Chelsea.

Last season’s Serie A runners-up confirmed the Belgium striker would be assessed next week, ruling him out of Wednesday night’s game against Cremonese.

It is a massive blow for boss Simone Inzaghi ahead of a crucial period of fixtures for his side

But according to a host of Italian outlets via Football Italia, including Gazzetta dello Sport, Tuttosport and Il Corriere dello Sport, Lukaku will also be out for Saturday’s crucial derby at San Siro.

It is a massive blow for Simone Inzaghi, with Lukaku having scored four goals in as many Serie A matches against their city rivals.

The outlets also claim he is likely to miss all the matches before next month’s international break – therefore ruling him out until October – including their first two fixtures of their Champions League campaign against Bayern Munich and Viktoria Plzen.

Gazzetta claim the best-case scenario would see the former Manchester United striker return to action against Udinese on September 18, their last game before their international stars head off to represent their countries.

He is therefore in a race against time to play for Belgium, who face Wales and Holland

But there are no suggestions he will not make Roberto Martinez’s squad for the World Cup

He is therefore in a race against time to play for the Red Devils, who face Wales and Holland in Nations League fixtures next month, but there is no suggestion he is in danger of missing the World Cup this winter.

If he does not manage to play for Roberto Martinez’s men during the break, he will target the first match after it against Jose Mourinho’s Roma at San Siro.

Lukaku sealed a dramatic return to Inter earlier this summer and has contributed one goal and one assist in three games so far this season, with Inzaghi’s men seventh in the standings.

Lukaku’s return to Inter this summer on loan came after an unexpectedly poor return to former club Chelsea in which he managed only 13 goals in 42 games in all competitions, having arrived for a club-record fee of £98million in August 2021.

Despite scoring three in his first four games. Lukaku then went goalless in the Premier League until December where he scored in successive games before another barren patch that lasted until May.
