Romelu Lukaku has claimed that he ‘knew’ Inter Milan would try and sign him if his move to Chelsea didn’t work out in 2021.
The Belgian forward is preparing to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, once his loan deal with the Champions League finalists is finished.
He’s failed to live up to the previous standards set during his time at the club from 2019-2021, however, still speaks highly of his experience at Inter this term.
And, ahead of his move back to west London, the striker has spoken about how he feels like he ‘belongs’ at the San Siro.
In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, the striker said: ‘I was good at Chelsea last season. But I knew then that if it didn’t work out at Chelsea, I still had Inter.

The Belgian striker was shipped out of Chelsea after falling out of favour with Thomas Tuchel
‘When I signed again, I knew: I belong here. I had that too at Anderlecht. I take this club seriously. I want to do my best. The people here see that. Being encouraged here is the best thing there is.’
Lukaku has had a fractured relationship with Chelsea throughout his career, having signed for the Blues as a youngster before being shipped out on multiple loans.
After stints at Everton, West Brom and Man United, Lukaku found himself playing for Inter in 2021 – where he quickly became a fan favourite.
His 34 goals from 51 appearances saw him become one of the most prolific forwards in Europe and he continued that into the next season, bagging 30 goals in 44 games.
His form in Italy was enough to persuade the Blues to part with £97.5million of their hard-earned cash and convince the Belgian striker to return to Stamford Bridge.
However, his struggles at Chelsea became apparent quickly and he soon fell out of favour with at-the-time manager Thomas Tuchel – who was sacked earlier this season.
Lukaku was sent on loan to Inter, who were keen to bring the Belgian back, but he’s failed to reach the standards that he’d previously set.
He’s mustered just 13 goals from 33 appearances in all competitions this year and has struggled with a number of injuries throughout the campaign.
