Luis Suarez ‘could leave Atletico Madrid for FREE this summer’ with Uruguayan possessing a clause in his deal that would allow him to exit for nothing… but former Barcelona striker is happy with life in Spanish capital
- Luis Suarez is currently the top scorer in LaLiga with 16 goals to his name
- Suarez is unlikely to trigger the release clause as he is happy at Atletico Madrid
- The 34-year-old Uruguayan endured a difficult exit from former club Barcelona
- Atletico are top of La Liga, five points clear of city rivals Real Madrid in second
Luis Suarez can reportedly leave Atletico Madrid on a free transfer this summer just a year after joining due to a clause in contract.
The 34-year-old signed a two-year deal after leaving Barcelona last September and has enjoyed a remarkable campaign so far, scoring 16 goals in 18 LaLiga appearances for the Rojiblancos.
However according to Marca, the Uruguayan striker has no intention of triggering the clause which comes into effect from June 30, as he relishes playing alongside his team-mates and enjoys a good relationship with manager Diego Simeone.
Luis Suarez has been in sparkling form for Atletico Madrid after joining from Barcelona
Suarez has been in exceptional form this season and his goals have fired Atletico five points clear at the top of LaLiga, with two games in hand over nearest challengers and city rivals Real Madrid.
The 34-year-old is the top scorer in the league this season and according to Mundo Deportivo – as per AS.com – he received a bonus of €1m (£875,000) with his 15th goal of the campaign.
The former Barcelona striker is on a heavily incentivised contract and his bonus will rise should he hit 20 goals, a figure that looks increasingly likely.
Suarez endured a difficult exit from the Nou Camp under new Barca boss Ronald Koeman, who replaced the sacked Quique Setien and could no longer guarantee the striker a starting birth – prompting the Uruguayan to leave.

However, he is proving his former employers wrong as the 34-year-old is enjoying a renaissance in the latter days of his playing career.
His goals could fire Atletico to their first league title since the 2013-14 season. Suarez’s former side Barca are third; eight points behind the Rojiblancos and have played a game more.
Next up for Simeone’s side is a trip to Levante in LaLiga on Wednesday before hosting the same opposition on Saturday.
They then face Chelsea in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday, February 23.
