Liverpool’s transfer stance should be obvious after Barcelona’s Coutinho stance

Liverpool are unlikely to splash the cash this summer, but could be offered the chance to sign a former club hero for free.

Barcelona are reportedly eager to send Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho back to Anfield in order to recoup some funds and cancel out some of their debt.

Barca are said to still owe a fee in the region of £50million to Liverpool stemming from their 2018 acquisition of the creative midfielder.

Reports suggest they view sending him back to Liverpool as an adequate way of striking off that debt and helping to ease their catastrophic financial situation.

However, with the Reds set for a big summer ahead of an attempt to recapture their Premier League title, they need to stay well away from Coutinho.

Liverpool have lost Georginio Wijnaldum already this summer and Naby Keita could depart.

But they've got a core of players ready to fill in in the middle of midfield, and Diogo Jota has already proved he is ready to provide support to the front three.

Curtis Jones is waiting for his chance to break through into the first team and is expected to play a huge role this season.

The youngster has the ability to take the ball forward and create chances, and at just 20 is a much better long-term option than Coutinho.

During his time at Anfield, the Brazilian was one of the most popular players in years. The way in which he manufactured his exit has made him public enemy number one on Merseyside.

Bringing him back to the club now would hardly go down well with the Liverpool fanbase, and would presumably cost a significant amount.

While there would be no transfer fee involved, it's unlikely that Coutinho would accept a contract too far off that of the highest earners at the club.

There's still no denying Coutinho's talent, but his time at Anfield is in the past now, and bringing him back would be the wrong thing on and off the pitch.

Liverpool have a solid core of players at the moment, there's no need to disrupt that now.
