Andy Robertson has broken the record for the most assists for a defender in Premier League history after setting up Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s opening goal against Aston Villa on Monday.
The Scottish full-back went into the match with 53 top-flight assists to his name, putting him level with former Everton and Wigan defender Leighton Baines.
It took him just five minutes to move past the former England international as he latched onto Trent Alexander-Arnold’s through ball and played a square ball into the path of Salah.

The Egyptian forward had the simplest of tasks of tapping the ball beyond Robin Olsen from six yards out to give Liverpool the lead.
Robertson’s 54th assist came in his 231st match, meaning he achieved the record in 189 fewer games than Baines.
The 28-year-old almost took his tally to 55 in the 20th minute when he whipped in a pinpoint free-kick that Joel Matip headed home.
The centre-back had just strayed offside, though, and the goal was correctly ruled out.

Robertson has cemented himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in the league in recent years, registering at least 10 assists in three of the last four Premier League seasons.
He has already managed five this term in 13 league appearances.
He has picked up where he left off before the Premier League paused for the World Cup, having registered two assists against Southampton in Liverpool’s previous league game last month.
