Liverpool’s ‘concrete’ £50m talks spells bad news for Curtis Jones

Ex-Liverpool keeper Bogdan on love for Anfield

Liverpool beating Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea to the signing of Romeo Lavia this summer could spell the end of Curtis Jones’ Anfield career. The 22-year-old midfielder has staked a claim for a starting berth next season with eye-catching exploits in recent months, but Jurgen Klopp could shut him out.

According to Sky Germany, Liverpool have held concrete talks with Lavia, though they haven’t yet agreed personal terms over a contract at Anfield.

The report claims Klopp is keen to secure the 19-year-old’s signature, and Southampton are demanding £50million to part ways.

Liverpool have already splashed over £120m to bring Brighton and Hove Albion’s Alexis Mac Allister and RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai to Merseyside.

And a third high-profile midfield arrival would spell bad news to the current members of Klopp’s ranks.

None more so than Jones, who looks to have a promising future under the German coach after an impressive end to last season and U21 European Championship campaign this summer.

Jones netted the winner as England beat Spain 1-0 on Saturday to lift their third U21 Euros title and first since 1984.

He also added goals to his game during the run-in as he became a crucial part of Liverpool’s ultimately-unsuccessful push for a top-four finish.

But Klopp would likely use the entirety of his summer transfer budget on three midfielders if he sanctions a £50m deal for Lavia.

And unloading that much cash suggests he views all three as regular starters to re-mould the high-energy midfield that made his Liverpool sides of old so dangerous.

Jones will return to Liverpool for pre-season with a starting berth firmly in his sights after flaunting his quality for club and country.

But he may end up seventh in Klopp’s pecking order when you consider a new trio would join Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara at Anfield.

Jones signed a new long-term contract in 2022, committing his future to Klopp and the Reds.

However, if regular minutes can’t be guaranteed next season, he could be tempted to pursue a new challenge if there is interest in his services.
