Bukayo Saka offers heartfelt apology to Arsenal fans after missed penalty

Bukayo Saka has sent a message to Arsenal supporters after he missed a vital penalty during their Premier League collapse at West Ham which dented their title charge.

The 21-year-old forward, who has been the Gunners' key player in their run towards a potential title, fired wide from the spot with a chance to make it 3-1.

That miss, after goals from Gabriel Jesus, Martin Odegaard and Said Benrahma, was followed by Jarrod Bowen's equaliser which leaves Arsenal just four points clear at the top having played one more game than City.

Saka wrote to his four million followers: "Regardless of the outcome, I’ll always accept my responsibility. Apologies Gunners, I’ll do everything I can to make it right."

One reply read: "Minor setbacks for major comebacks Starboy." A second added: "We win together we lose together keep your head up." A third agreed: "Could never give up on someone who got us this far."

With Arsenal taking on bottom side Southampton next before travelling to the Etihad to play City, Mikel Arteta needs his side to find their winning form.

Having slipped up against Liverpool after another two-goal lead, Arsenal had previously won seven games in a row.

Arteta told BBC 5 Live of the penalty miss: "Yes [it could have been game over], but we don't know that. We missed it, and that's the story of the game."

And added of the title race: "It's really difficult to win this league. Every single game, you see yesterday what happened in each game, regardless of the result, you really have to be at your best [for the whole game], you have to really earn it.

"Every team is fighting for what they want, 30 minutes [of playing well] is not enough."

With City taking on Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Sheffield United in the FA Cup, they have one more fixture than the Gunners before their showdown on April 26.
