Everton forward Richarlison couldn’t resist mocking Merseyside rivals, Liverpool, last night as they trailed Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The Reds were expected to carry on where they left off following the 3-0 drubbing of Arsenal last weekend but the experience of Los Blancos made life difficult for the Premier League champions, who endured a nightmare opening 45 minutes.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were 2-0 down before the break, courtesy of goals from Vinicius Junior and Marco Asensio.

The Brazilian enjoyed a field day up against Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose performance helped justify Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave him out of the England set-up during the international break.

Mohamed Salah pulled back a crucial away goal just after the interval before Vinicius helped himself to his second of the evening to put Real Madrid in the driving seat.

The 20-year-old has flattered to deceive since arriving from Flamengo in 2018 but this was, without doubt, his best-ever performance under Zinedine Zidane.

Back in Liverpool, Richarlison couldn’t help but poke fun at those from the red half of the city, by posting a snap of him and Vinicius on his Instagram story with some eye emojis.

The Toffees frontman is a fan favourite at Goodison Park and his reputation was enhanced once again back in February when he scored in Everton’s first win at Anfield in 22 years.

It was also a moment of personal redemption for Richarlison, who was sent off in the 2-2 draw between the two sides back in October when he clattered into Thiago Alcantara in stoppage time.

He recently revealed in an interview with YouTuber ‘Pilhado’, that he was ignored by the Liverpool midfielder after reaching out to apologise on social media.

“The last game I made that challenge on Thiago and got sent off. My goodness,” Richarlison said.

“Then I went on Instagram to apologise and such. He only saw it. I said ‘I’m going to delete this message too since he doesn’t want to reply’.

“Then I went there and deleted it. He didn’t answer, no.”

Richarlison then made it clear he would have the last laugh, adding: “Then there was the derby now, at their home, he didn’t look at my face, I didn’t look at him, either. The game goes on. He ignored the pigeon.”
