Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car has confirmed that he was the subject of a transfer approach from Liverpool in January.

The Reds were desperate to bolster their options at the back after losing Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to long-term injuries and they made a move for Caleta-Car.

However, the move fell through, with the 24-year-old revealing it was "an honour" that Liverpool were interested in him.

"I received an offer from Liverpool," Caleta-Car said. "It was an honour for me to know that such a club wanted me. We decided with the club that I was going to stay.

"Marseille is also a great club and I still have a lot of improving to do here."

Liverpool ended up completing the signings of Preston North End defender Ben Davies and Schalke's Ozan Kabak instead, with Davies signing a permanent deal and Kabak joining on loan with an option to buy.

Davies is yet to make his debut for the Reds, while Kabak has partnered Jordan Henderson in defence for Liverpool's last two games.

In their Champions League last 16 first leg tie with RB Leipzig, Kabak helped Jurgen Klopp's side keep a clean sheet and win the game 2-0.

Speaking after the game, Kabak told the club's official website : "It was so special for me because this was my first clean sheet and my first win in this jersey.

"I'm a new player, I'm a young player and there's a lot of stars here. I need a little time to adapt here and with time I will be better I think.

"I think we played very well and we gave everything on the pitch. We won all challenges in midfield and I think we deserved to win and I'm so happy.
