Liverpool transfer chief Jorg Schmadtke could agree ideal Carvalho swap deal
Jurgen Klopp reviews Liverpool's 4-4 draw with Southampton
Liverpool should use discussions with RB Leipzig over a reported move for Fabio Carvalho to convince the Bundesliga side to part ways with Josko Gvardiol. While Jurgen Klopp and new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will be focused on a midfield overhaul this summer, the Reds also need some fresh faces in defence.
Gvardiol would be the perfect defensive signing for Liverpool. Able to play at both centre-back and left-back, the Croatian adds versatility and an ability to play out from the back with his left foot. Klopp currently has no left-footed central defenders.
Liverpool have long been linked with the 21-year-old but would face strong competition from several Premier League and Champions League rivals. Chelsea and Manchester City are also rumoured to be interested in a deal for the Leipzig starlet.
A reported release clause of £97million supposedly becomes active in the summer of 2024, but Liverpool should spend big this summer to sign one of the world’s most coveted young defenders. And they could use discussions over a reported move for midfielder Carvalho as the ideal time to begin negotiations.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have rejected an opening bid from Leipzig for Carvalho. The Premier League side do not want to lose the 20-year-old on a permanent deal, despite reports last week claiming that the former Fulham prospect was not in Klopp’s plans.
Carvalho is facing an uncertain future at Anfield after struggling to get into Klopp’s preferred team last season, even when the form of several other midfielders was poor. Liverpool parted with around £8m in compensation to sign the playmaker from Fulham last year but he seems headed for an early exit.
The Portugal U21 international, who has also represented England at other age groups, has been linked with both permanent and loan exits. It seems that German outfit Leipzig are keen on a deal.
It will be a busy summer transfer window for Klopp and Schmadtke, whose appointment was confirmed earlier this week. The German is a close friend of the Liverpool boss and replaces the outgoing Julian Ward after leaving Wolfsburg in February.

Liverpool are expected to focus on midfield signings this summer. Klopp’s midfield struggled with form and fitness last season, culminating in a disappointing fifth-place finish.
James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have both departed, leaving room for new faces. Chelsea’s Mason Mount has been linked with a switch to Anfield, although Liverpool supposedly face competition from Manchester United.
However, a move for Gvardiol – however expensive it may be – would improve Liverpool’s defence. He would reunite with former Leipzig defensive colleague Ibrahima Konate to form a long-term partnership.
