Liverpool and Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara has launched an astonishing attack on the state of modern football as his team-mates eye Group E progression at Euro 2020.

The 30-year-old, who has not yet had the impact that fans were hoping for following his switch from Bayern Munich to Anfield last summer, came off the bench against Sweden as the game ended goalless.

As part of his rant, Thiago hit out at VAR and the way it can slow down the game, despite being used successfully by the referees at the ongoing tournament.

In addition, he talked about the fitness of current stars, stating that there is less dribbling, and that players are faster and stronger than they used to be.

Thiago told L'Equipe: “I hate modern football.

“We see less magic. As the players are faster. There is no need to do as much dribbling, because the players are faster, more physical.

"The players are more developed in every way, but you are missing those players who can give you an intake of breath during moments in the game.”

Will Thiago prove to be a success at Liverpool? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Before adding: “There's also VAR… I've always been against it and wish it didn’t exist.

"It takes the essence of the game away from you. It takes away the cunning, the mischief, that is part of football – as long as you don't hurt anyone, of course.

“We make mistakes when we play. Referees must do so too, as they are human. Without trickery, many famous moments in the history of football would not have happened.

"Above all, when we score, even if from midfield, we have to wait, it can be overturned.”

With Klopp saying of his tricky first season at Liverpool back in May: "Thiago, in a really difficult season, has become a very important player for us.

"That is the most important thing you can say about him.

"But creating is the moment where a lot of things have to come together and that is why it was difficult for Thiago, but we are completely happy with him."
