Liverpool signing Ramsey injured already as Klopp laments problem "nobody knew"

New Liverpool signing Calvin Ramsey has been forced to miss first-team training this week after an injury Jurgen Klopp claims "nobody knew" has emerged.

The Reds wrapped up a £6.5million deal for the highly-rated 18-year-old recently, securing his services from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen. The young right-back is expected to play understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold during the upcoming campaign, especially as previous stand-in Neco Williams has joined Premier League new-boys Nottingham Forest in a £17m deal.

Much is expected of the talented teenager going forward, but at present, his start to life at Liverpool has suffered a surprising setback. According to Reds boss Klopp, Ramsey has been forced to skip first-team training as a result of an injury which "nobody knew" about.

"Unfortunately, Calvin is now not training with us in the moment, he has a little injury," the German revealed to the club's official website. "Nobody knew, we found it when he did his medical check.

"Until today he has no problems but the medical department tells us if we don’t take care for that now, he will have a problem in the future. So, when you are that young then, of course, he has a long career ahead of him, so we are very responsible in these moments, so he didn’t train yet with the team but is doing a lot of fitness work."

Ramsey began pre-season alongside a selection of the club's senior figures on Monday, but has since been absent from the outside pitches for reasons previously unknown. Klopp has now confirmed why, while adding: "It will not take too long I think."

The young Scot enjoyed a stellar campaign in a struggling Aberdeen side last term, swooping the Scottish FWA Young Player of the Year award for his efforts having contributed one goal and nine assists. Although Klopp has thus far been denied the chance to watch Ramsey himself, the Liverpool manager talked up the qualities the right-back possesses.

"So I didn’t see him yet in training but everything we saw about him, we heard about him, I heard from him: a fantastic boy," he added. "And what a player he is, what he did for Aberdeen last year, absolutely exceptional.

"In his age group and you know the things we need from a full-back, he is as close as it gets to the things we want and is still a kid. So we really expect a lot from him in the long term."
