Liverpool's official Twitter account gave their fans one heck of a scare on Friday by responding to a cryptic tweet from Mo Salah's agent – moments before revealing the Egyptian had signed a contract extension.

Salah was about to enter the final year of his deal at Anfield having failed to agree terms with the club following 12 months of tense negotiations, but the 30-year-old has finally put to pen-to-paper on a new three-year contract.

The news comes as a massive relief to supporters who were fooled into thinking Salah's days at Liverpool were numbered following a crafty collaboration between the club's Twitter account and the player's agent Ramy Abbas Issa.

Issa – who has a history of cryptic social media posts – tweeted a laughing face emoji, hours after reports emerged that Liverpool representatives had flown to Greece – where Salah is currently on holiday – in order to thrash out a deal.

In response, Liverpool's Twitter account quote-tweeted the post with a hand-on-head emoji, suggesting that they were thoroughly fed up with the agent's antics.

But it was all in jest, as news of Salah's contract extension broke just a few minutes later.

Speaking to Liverpool's official website about the deal, Salah said: "I feel great and [I am] excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone.

"It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next. I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going [upwards]. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies.

“I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We have new signings as well. We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again."
