Kylian Mbappe could be leaving Paris Saint-Germain for free next summer and Real Madrid remains his likely destination. However, Liverpool continue to be linked with the Frenchman and have been reminded not to lose hope.

Liverpool have been loosely linked with a blockbuster move for Kylian Mbappe for some time now, but it remains likely that the star will move to Real Madrid.

Madrid submitted an offer of £189million for Mbappe in the summer in what have been a world-record transfer, but their approach was knocked back by PSG despite his contract expiring at the end of this season.

Mbappe could walk away for free next summer after joining PSG for £150m in 2018, and the Frenchman is still yet to sign a new deal at the club with Europe’s elite lurking.

Although Liverpool may feel that their efforts could be wasted if Mbappe is Madrid bound, they have been reminded by a club legend to use their own situation as an example that a move is never set in stone.

Liverpool lost Gini Wijnaldum this summer after it became clear that the Dutchman would not be extending his stay at Anfield, and it seemed nailed on that the midfielder would move to Barcelona.

However, at the last minute he opted to join PSG instead, which rocked Barcelona bosses and came as a surprise to many, and Ian Rush has used this situation as an example of why Liverpool shouldn’t hold back in their efforts to sign Mbappe.

Rush has been urging Liverpool to try and sign Mbappe for some time, and the Anfield legend recently told Gambling.com: “Reports suggest the Bernabeu is where he’s [Mbappe] destined to end up but when a player becomes a free agent you never know what direction they might take.

“We all thought Gini Wijnaldum was heading for Barcelona last summer only for PSG to snap him up.

“Could Liverpool hijack Mbappe’s proposed move to Real Madrid? I know he’s an admirer of Liverpool and in my opinion it would be great if the club could sign someone like him, but Real Madrid’s interest is strong and genuine.

“For me, if you want to play in the best league in the world and for the best club in that division, then there’s only one option and that’s the Premier League and Liverpool FC. It’s as simple as that.

“Ultimately, it will come down to what him and his agent believe is right for them, but if the opportunity is there I’d personally love to see Liverpool go in for him.

“I always say you should only sign players who are better than what you already have in that position. Is Mbappe better than what we currently have in his position? In my opinion yes, I think he’d make Liverpool a stronger team.”

Liverpool have also been handed a major boost in their potential pursuit of Mbappe as according to El Nacional, the Frenchman is unhappy with how Madrid have performed under Carlo Ancelotti, and has reservations about making a move after being left ‘disappointed’ with their progress.

Mbappe has also expressed his admiration for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and the same report claimed that the PSG star would want to see Madrid replace Ancelotti with the German in order for him to move to the Bernabeu.

However, Klopp has no intention of leaving Liverpool after his recent outburst ahead of their clash with Arsenal, as he said: “It’s over when it’s over, but it’s far away from being over, so let’s focus on that.”

With Klopp staying put, Liverpool could do their best to attract Mbappe, who would have the no.7 available to him at the start of next season with James Milner likely to leave the club.

Liverpool would be unstoppable with Mbappe, but they have their own contract issues to solve with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all seeing their deals expire at the end of next season.

A deal for Mbappe could see all their current stars put pen to paper, as Klopp targets a fresh talisman to maintain Liverpool’s recent success.
