Liverpool’s owners, the Fenway Sports Group, have been told that manager Jurgen Klopp will not step in to help with contract negotiations with star player Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has starred for the Reds this season, scoring 15 goals in 15 games in all competitions.

Those goals have helped fire the club into a Premier League title challenge, with Klopp’s side four points off leaders Chelsea.

His current run of form has set him up for another stunning season in front of goal for the Reds, with Salah having scored at least 23 goals in each of his previous four campaigns at Anfield.

His importance to Klopp’s side cannot be understated, with his displays from the right-wing a key part of the team’s success in recent years.

Clearly, Liverpool cannot afford to lose him unless they want to pay out a mega-fee on finding a suitable replacement.

But that is a situation that is fast becoming possible, with contract talks continuing to stall between Salah and the club.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2023, with negotiations having been ongoing for the best part of a year.

Liverpool have been unable to agree terms with Salah as of yet, with time running out before they have to accept he will be departing and look to bring in a fee.

Klopp has grown increasingly frustrated by the inability of his club’s hierarchy to come to an agreement.

But he has insisted that despite his frustrations, he will not be getting involved in the negotiations with Salah’s representatives.

Instead, the German will remain separated from the discussions, leaving them to outgoing sporting director Michael Edwards.

“I speak to players constantly but it is not the right thing for a manager to speak to players about contracts,” he said.

“You need someone in between. For the player that is the agent, for the club it is the sporting director.

“When a player is very important for you and you say: ‘You can have this or that’ and he doesn’t want to hear it and says: ‘I think I’m worth more than that!’…this conversation shouldn’t happen with the person who is responsible for football things.”

Klopp’s side host Arsenal on Saturday evening, their first game following Edwards’ announcement that he will leave his role at the end of the season.

Despite Edwards’ impending exit, Klopp still believes that the sporting director role is a crucial one.

“If I would have come here 10 years ago and told you a sporting director is really important you would have told me: ‘Go back to Germany and deal with that there!’” he said.

“I wanted a sporting director when I came here. Michael had a similar job before, but he got the job in the end.

“I don’t want to deal every day with players’ agents and anything that takes away from the really important stuff you have to do.”
