Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres are players that are highly regarded still among the Liverpool faithful, but despite their popularity, they don’t make the club’s greatest ever XI according to a former star.

Liverpool have had some exceptional talent grace the club since 1892 when the club was founded, taking over at Anfield which was formally the home of Merseyside rivals Everton.

19 top-flight titles, six European cups and seven FA Cups are just some of the trophies that have been won throughout the club’s history, and the likes of Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard have become legends over the years.

Liverpool’s current squad is one of the best that have ever stepped foot on the famous Anfield turf, but former stars such as Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres stood out in sides that weren’t quite as talented, further highlighting their ability.

However, former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch would not put either Suarez or Torres in his greatest Liverpool XI.

Crouch recently wrote a column for the Daily Mail, and commented on how he believes that Mohamed Salah is under appreciated for what he has done at Liverpool, after the Egyptian became the fastest to ever reach 100 league goals at the club.

Salah’s incredible achievement was the third fastest among foreign players throughout Premier League history, with only Thierry Henry and Sergio Aguero reaching the milestone in fewer games.

Crouch feels that there is an under-appreciation on Salah’s return because the numbers he continues to produce every season have become normal, and said that there is no comparison between the Egyptian and former players Torres and Suarez, who he surpasses with ease.

The former England international commented on Salah’s inclusion in his greatest Liverpool XI, and said: “It is reaching the stage where you look at what he is doing and have to come to the conclusion that he is a modern-day great.

“Salah walks into the right-hand side of Liverpool’s best-ever XI. He has that position sewn up.

“Get him in there alongside Gerrard, Souness, Rush, Dalglish — whoever you pick, he has to be included. When you think of the players who have worn that red shirt, Salah gets in the ultimate team. Suarez and Torres do not.”

Suarez only spent three seasons at Liverpool, but his impact was uncanny in an underwhelming side, and his heroics almost brought the Reds their first ever Premier League title.

Perhaps Suarez is held in such high regard because he did leave, and sometimes you only fully appreciate something once it’s gone, and the Uruguayan is till performing at the highest level now with Atletico Madrid.

Torres only spent four seasons at Liverpool, and sparked a dangerous partnership with Gerrard before leaving the club and joining Chelsea.

It is well documented that the transfer didn’t go as well as planned, and Torres failed to live up to the high standards that he set at Liverpool, and ultimately failed to resurrect his career upon leaving Anfield.

Salah is undoubtedly a Liverpool great, and this will become more apparent further down the line, and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that the Egyptian remains a part of his side for the long-term as the winger is still yet to sign a new contract.

Many first team stars signed new contracts this summer, but Salah is currently missing from that list, and Liverpool will be sweating as he enters the final two years of his current deal.

If the issue cannot be resolved ahead of next season, Liverpool will be forced into an ultimatum as they weigh up whether to keep Salah for the duration of his contract and risk him leaving for free, or cash in on the Egyptian while they can.

Regardless of Salah’s future he will be regarded as a Liverpool great, as the winger has been integral to the recent success that Klopp has brought to Anfield, ending their long drought for a league title.
