Liverpool icon John Aldridge has suggested that Jurgen Klopp could make changes to his training programme ahead of the end of season run-in. The Reds face Southampton on Tuesday just a few days after playing 120 minutes and penalties in their FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

Klopp has lamented his side’s schedule and believes the fixture with Southampton could have been played on Thursday rather than Tuesday, and is expected to make several changes from the team that started against Chelsea.

Aldridge told Sky Sports: “From a manager’s point of view, you’re probably best toning the training down a little bit and reserving your energy for the big three games coming up.

“You ride the crest of a wave, you just want the games to come thick and fast. It’s a great situation to be in, won two cups, it’s out of our hands the league but the lads can only go to Southampton tomorrow and do their best.”

After picking up injuries to key players Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Djik in the cup final, Liverpool have responded by reappointing former club physio Christopher Rohrbeck. The Reds have also been without influential midfielder Fabinho, and will rely on the strength in depth of the squad to maintain their title challenge. With Salah a doubt for the Southampton game, forwards Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi will all be pushing to keep the pressure on Manchester City.

When asked if Liverpool’s strikeforce are as good as any in the world, Alridge replied: “I think if you mention five strikers then I think so I really do. Even though to be quite honest Mo has not been quite at it for some time, maybe it’s the contract angle. He has not been at his best for a month or two now but hopefully that will come if he plays.

“Jota is a goalscorer, Mane is different class. Firmino, what he brings to the team. Diaz has been special, he really has. He has come and hit the ground running, he is like a breath of fresh air since he came into the team. He has been unbelievable, he has been unmarkable at times.”

After praising Diaz, who Liverpool signed in the winter transfer market, Alridge was asked if he was the Premier League’s best ever January signing. He said: “There has been a few in the past, Liverpool have made a couple, Suarez in particular but people say it is not the time to buy, well that’s proved wrong a little bit.

“I didn’t expect him to hit the ground running as he has, I have to say. When players come to a different environment, a different country, it takes time settling down but he has been brilliant. The passion, the hunger and desire that he shows on the pitch is just what the Anfield faithful want to see from the players.”
