Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has reminded Chelsea fans what happened in 2005 when discussing Jurgen Klopp’s prospects of winning the Champions League this season. Liverpool return to action in the Premier League this weekend after a three-week break with a crunch match against Arsenal on Saturday.

Klopp’s side face a battle on their hands to finish inside the top four with just nine league games remaining.

But attention will also be on the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The Reds have an incredible record in the European knockout stages during Klopp’s time in charge with last season’s defeat to Atletico Madrid being the only time the German coach has failed to reach a European final.

There is history between Liverpool and Real as well, with the last meeting between the two teams being the 2018 Champions League final.

The La Liga outfit came out on top that night but Liverpool would go on to avenge that loss a year later, defeating Tottenham to win their sixth European crown.

It was their first since winning the 2005 Champions League title in one of the most historic finals in modern history.

This year’s campaign also has some similarities to that trophy-winning campaign with Chelsea potentially facing Liverpool in the semi-finals with the final once again being held in Istanbul.

The Reds infamously knocked Chelsea out courtesy of Luis Garcia’s ‘ghost goal’, which infuriated those associated with the west London club.

DON’T MISS

The potential meeting between the two Premier League sides has got fans and former players talking though and ‘King Kenny’ believes it would be Liverpool coming out on top again.

Dalglish thinks that Liverpool have been hurt most by the fact there are no fans in stadiums while injuries have also played their part.

“We miss the fans because they get the players up. We’ve always played great tribute to them and had great success,” Dalglish told talkSPORT.

“There’s nobody there cheering on Liverpool and they think they’re better than they are.

“Two central midfield players coming back into the back four and playing 20 yards back. They weren’t 20 yards back breaking the opposing down.

“They are still a threat. Still in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. When have you ever been happy drawing Real Madrid. You’ve missed Bayern and Man City.

“If they can beat Real Madrid they can go all the way to the final. And it’s in Istanbul.

“Chelsea came and beat us at Anfield. He’s been on a great run. We’ll beat them in the semi-final like before.”
