Liverpool hero in feud with Klopp tells Thiago to quit Anfield for rivals
Liverpool: Klopp declares performance a 'good day in the office'
Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has told Thiago that he needs to quit Anfield for either Arsenal or Manchester City as he risks riling Jurgen Klopp up further, following their previous war of words. Hamann spent seven successful years on Merseyside where he won a number of trophies including the 2005 Champions League final but does not seem to have remained on the best of terms with those currently in charge at the club.
Having previously hit out at Klopp and his assistant Pep Lijnders, Hamann has returned with some advice for Thiago and claimed that he should leave amid competition from Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. The ex-midfielder went one further by insisting that he should not only leave but join one of the Reds’ main Premier League rivals amid interest from Saudi Arabia.
“I’ve never been a big fan of Thiago Alcantara,” Hamann told Lord Ping. “He’s having far too many injuries and he couldn’t get in the Liverpool team last season when he was fit and when there was a lot less competition in his position.
“If someone else comes in like Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia or Aurelien Tchouameni then the competition will be very tough. Liverpool have Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic coming back too, who will all need minutes. I don’t see Thiago featuring too much next season, even if he is fit.

“I’m sure there are clubs interested in Thiago, if he stays in the Premier League, he needs to join one of the top four teams who have a lot of possession, like Man City or Arsenal. The more possession you have, the better Thiago plays. He’s not the best player out of possession, there might be a market in Spain too. He’s been a decent player, not a ‘great’ player for Liverpool as some people have said. The physicality of the Premier League has gotten to him.”
Thiago has received reported interest from the Middle East and Barcelona, but Klopp may not be best pleased with Hamann’s suggestion once again – alerting Liverpool’s rivals to the 32-year-old playmaker’s suitability for Arsenal and City, having already been in Klopp’s bad books.

The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch
Last year, Klopp was enraged by Hamann’s comments regarding his assistant Lijnders. Klopp asked Hamann to “have balls” and to criticise the head coach instead, sparking a war of words between the pair after Hamann felt that it was improper for the number two to release a book with insight into the Liverpool team while still in a job at Anfield.
“The alarm bells should have been ringing for Liverpool fans when the current assistant manager wrote a book while still employed by the club,” Hamann tweeted in February 2022. “How he was allowed to do it, I’m not too sure.”
Klopp responded: “I just don’t like it if you go for the wrong people – go for me, that’s fine, but don’t go for other people. I get an awful lot of money to face these situations, and my life is fine. Don’t criticise them [staff who can’t respond] – have the balls and go for me, then the confrontation can happen.”
