Liverpool have been handed Europa League favour with fixture release

Liverpool's Anfield stadium in focus

Liverpool will play just once away from home in the immediate aftermath of a Europa League tie, in a major boost to their Premier League hopes. A draining season last term saw the Reds slump to a fifth-place finish, so Jurgen Klopp’s side will be hoping for a better performance this time around.

And luck may be on their side as Liverpool will need to do little travelling after their six group stage games in Europe. Some clubs have previously come unstuck after being given away matches as their next fixture after a long journey on the continent.

Liverpool begin their Europa League campaign on September 21, with ties to be confirmed when the draw takes place on September 1. They play West Ham at Anfield the week after, meaning they will not be travelling far after their first clash in Europe.

Matchday two of the tournament’s group stage takes place on October 5, with a difficult trip to Brighton coming the weekend after. It is the only time Klopp’s side will need to travel in the Premier League after playing a Europa League group stage game.

That is because Liverpool will play at home after their remaining four Europa League matches, before the knockout rounds. They will play further European games on October 26, November 9, 30, and December 14.

Each of those fixtures will be followed by Anfield clashes with Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Fulham and Manchester United, respectively. Klopp will appreciate that his side will not need to travel far after the majority of their Europa League games, ensuring his side do not fatigue as quickly as they did in 2022-23.

Liverpool quickly fell away in the Premier League last season, perhaps not helped by a gruelling 2021-22 campaign in which they competed in every possible game due to runs in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League.

The start to next season provides a difficult run – Liverpool travel to Chelsea on the opening day before hosting Bournemouth. They then go to Newcastle, who are set to spend big money this summer to ensure they remain in the Premier League’s top four come May 2024.

But Klopp has big transfer plans of his own to bolster his side. Liverpool have already confirmed the arrival of World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, while a move for another midfielder is reported to be in the pipeline.
