Football fans are fearing for ex-AFC Wimbledon chief Danny Macklin after he posted a worrying statement to Twitter on Friday.

In a lengthy letter, Macklin said his 'life was in tatters' and asked those he knew to help his family. Macklin, who held senior posts at Leyton Orient, Southend United and Essex County Cricket Club, is best known for his time at AFC Wimbledon, where he was managing director.

He left the Dons earlier this season after allegations were made that he made abusive and sexist comments to a female member of staff. Macklin was charged by the FA on Wednesday for his remarks.

In his heartbreaking letter on Twitter, Macklin said he had made some hideous comments that have "caused so much pain for so many people". Macklin asked fans to remember the person he was, not the person he has become and to remember that "mental health is real".

Macklin said he is "not sexist" and he "never has been", but reiterated "I am the one at fault and I 100% know that. I massively regret the private comment I made."

He also addressed his parents, his wife, his children and former friends and colleagues, while also revealing that he was recently sectioned under the mental health act.

Football fans who saw the statement on social media have expressed their worry for his well-being. With some asking anyone who has Macklin's phone number, or knows his whereabouts, to try and get in contact with the ex-AFC Wimbledon chief.

One person said: "Can anyone who has Danny’s number please get in touch with him immediately." Another added: "Danny this isn’t the way. Football is a family. A big f**ked up family, but a family none the less. Our inbox never ever closes. Reach out to someone."

One friend responded to the post revealing he had handed Macklin's number over to the police, and they are in the process of locating him.
