Liverpool flop Mignolet holds Champions League record with Neuer and Courtois

Simon Mignolet has kept a clean sheet in each of his Champions League appearances so far this this season alongside world renowned fellow goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois.

The former Liverpool stopper, who now plays for Club Brugge, kept Atletico Madrid at bay in a 2-0 victory on Tuesday (October 4), with the Belgian side continuing their perfect start to the tournament.

Impressively, the underdogs top Group B, having already beaten Porto 4-0 and Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 – meaning they are yet to concede a goal in the competition.

Their defensive brilliance means that Mignolet has matched the achievements of Bayern Munich's Neuer and former Chelsea man Courtois, who helped Real Madrid all the way to the trophy last season.

Bayern top Group C having seen off both Barcelona and Inter Milan 2-0, and putting five past Viktoria Plzen without reply in their third fixture.

Real have not played their third game of the group stage against Shakhtar Donetsk – but they have kept two clean sheets in their wins over Celtic (3-0), and RB Leipzig (2-0).

Mignolet, 34, joined Liverpool from Sunderland back in 2013 for a reported fee of £9million on a five-year contract.

He was the main man between the sticks for the Reds for nearly five seasons, before being second-in-command to now-Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius.

In the summer of 2019, the Belgian returned to his home nation, signing for Club Brugge for a reported fee of £6.4 million.

When asked whether he regretted the way he left Anfield, he told Goal later that year: "No, I’m really pleased for them! I hope to God they win [that year’s Champions League] it!”

“I never doubted them. They are such a good team, so well coached and with such good players. They deserve their success. I knew what I was walking away from. But I was comfortable with that.

“At Liverpool, we won the Champions League last season, and I know I played a part in that success even if I didn’t play the games. It will always be a very proud moment for me. But if you ask me honestly, I will say I prefer to win the Belgian League by playing every game. "

He has since won three league titles in Belgium, already playing 154 times for the club.
