Fans lined the streets to welcome Liverpool home hours after their Champions League final heartache as Jurgen Klopp and his Premier League stars paraded their FA Cup and Carabao Cup trophies on an open-top bus tour.

The Reds could not capture a treble as they were beaten by the only goal of the game against Real Madrid at the Stade de France on Saturday, but they received a rapturous reception as they weaved through Liverpool to celebrate a sensational season.

Manager Klopp was seen grinning with his players, who missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City on the final day of the season despite beating Wolves at Anfield.

Roads were closed around the city as the squad took a route of more than eight miles in a ceremony that had been planned since the side’s dramatic FA Cup final win over Chelsea on penalties on May 14.

Klopp was seen sampling a beer and players including formidable defender Virgil van Dijk, who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or, also enjoyed a drink.

Smiling Premier League joint top-scorer Mohamed Salah appeared to have recovered from the despair of failing to win Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

City wobbled on a thrilling final day of the title race, falling 2-0 behind to Aston Villa as a shock defeat loomed – and that would have allowed Liverpool to overtake them with their victory against Wolves.

Pep Guardiola’s side rallied late to beat Villa 3-2 and retain the title at the Etihad Stadium, ensuring Liverpool’s win was academic.

The club’s women’s side, who won the FA Women’s Championship in April, were among the stars on the bus showing off hard-earned silverware.

The parade fell on the 37th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium disaster, and tributes were also paid to the 39 supporters who lost their lives in the tragedy.
