Liverpool face Mourinho problem in pursuit of Gini Wijnaldum ‘replacement’
Roma boss Jose Mourinho loves nothing more than to upset the applecart – and he could be about ruin Liverpool’s plan to sign his star midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new midfield general with the loss of Georginio Wijnaldum to PSG now confirmed, and Pellegrini has emerged as a potential replacement.
The Reds have reportedly tabled a £28.5million bid for the 24-year-old, but it seems unlikely that Mourinho will allow the Italian ace to depart the Stadio Olimpico for Anfield this summer.
Notwithstanding the fact Mourinho doesn’t want to lose any of his key men during his first summer in charge, Pellegrini is reportedly a player the Portuguese boss wanted to sign during his time at Manchester United.
According to a 2018 report in Corriere dello Sport, representatives from United were willing to double the midfielder’s wages to bring him to Old Trafford.
A move never came to fruition and Pelligrini has remained at Roma ever since, but Mourinho’s reported interest suggests he will fight tooth-and-nail to keep hold of the Italy international now he is the player’s manager.
However, the situation could be complicated by the time remaining on the midfield’s current contract.
Is Lorenzo Pellegrini the right man to replace Gini Wijnaldum at Liverpool? Let us know in the comments section.
Pellegrini has just one-year remaining on his current deal meaning Roma could be forced to sell or see him leave for free next summer.
The youngster has made 151 appearances for his boyhood club – 47 of which have come this season.
He also has 11 Serie A goals to his name this term, potentially offering Klopp a more attacking option from midfield if he does move to Anfield.
Liverpool fans will be able to watch Pellegrini in action this summer as he takes to the field with Italy in the European Championship.
