Liverpool 'eyeing Rennes' Martin Terrier' as Sadio Mane replacement

Liverpool are ‘eyeing Rennes star Martin Terrier’ after the Frenchman’s 21-goal haul in Ligue 1 as the Reds brace themselves for Sadio Mane’s exit and more uncertainty over Mohamed Salah’s long-term Anfield future

  • Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have one year left on their Liverpool contracts
  • It is looking increasingly likely that Mane will make an Anfield exit this summer
  • Jurgen Klopp is said to be tracking Martin Terrier as a potential replacement
  • The Rennes forward score 21 times in 37 appearances in Ligue 1 this season

Liverpool are eyeing Rennes forward Martin Terrier as a potential replacement for Sadio Mane amid increasing uncertainty over Mohamed Salah’s long-term future at Anfield, according to reports.

Mane has been a crucial member of Jurgen Klopp’s side since his arrival at Anfield in 2016 but it is becoming increasingly likely that he will leave the club this summer.

The 30-year-old has one year remaining on his deal with the Reds and Bayern Munich are believed to be in pole position to snatch up the forward in the transfer window to replace Robert Lewandowski, who has stated his desire to leave the German side.

Meanwhile, Salah has committed to the Reds for the 2022-23 campaign but the Egyptian forward’s future beyond that date is uncertain, with his current contract also expiring next year.

Mane’s departure will leave Klopp with a void to fill in his front three but Liverpool are said to already have an ideal replacement in mind.

According to The Mirror, the Reds are tracking Terrier, who has excelled at Rennes this season.

The 25-year-old joined the Ligue 1 side in 2020 for £10million following spells at Lyon and Lille.

The Frenchman has netted 21 times in 37 top-flight appearances and registered seven assists this season.

19 of his goals this term came from open play – just one non-penalty goal less than Ballon d’Or favourite and Champions League winner Karim Benzema.

Standing at six foot, Terrier is a strong, but also technical, striker that could be an ideal fit to fill Mane’s shoes.

Similarly to Mane, Terrier can play across the front line as a winger, centre forward and second striker.

However, he not only excels on the ball but also off it. His pressing has been key for Rennes at times this season, leading defensive moves into attacking ones deep in the opposition’s half – a critical part of Klopp’s Liverpool style.

Despite his success in France, Terrier has gone largely under the radar in the Premier League and remains uncapped for the national team.

It is a fact that could play into Liverpool’s hands as the Reds have often snatched up underrated stars for reasonable fees without competition.

While Mane looks to be heading out of the door to Bayern, Salah is still set to grace the Anfield faithful with his displays next season.

Ahead of the Champions League final, Salah committed himself to Liverpool next season

However, as he enters the final 12 months of his deal, the Egyptian could reportedly make a sensational move to another Premier League side.

The Athletic have claimed that the 29-year-old would rather remain in the Premier League than move overseas when his deal at Anfield expires – putting Liverpool’s rivals on red alert.

The Reds already seem to be forming a contingency plan for the collapse of their original front-three superstars after the swift move for Luis Diaz and an early signing of Fabio Carvalho and the signing of Terrier could be the next step in Liverpool 2.0.
