Liverpool could still make millions from Brewster because of transfer clause

Liverpool raked in £25million when they sold Rhian Brewster to Sheffield United last summer, but could go on to make even more from the forward.

Brewster had spent the second half of last season on loan at Championship side Swansea City.

His goals helped propel them to the play-offs, where they were beaten in the semi-finals by Brentford.

During his time there, however, he scored ten times in 19 league appearances and earned attention from around the Premier League.

When he returned to Liverpool in the summer, it was reported that the Reds were eager to offload him permanently as he was unlikely to be included in Jurgen Klopp's first-team plans.

After a summer of speculation over where Brewster would end up, Sheffield United ended up stumping up the cash and signing him for £25m.

Brewster has struggled since making the move, as the Blades have capitulated and now seem set for a return to the second tier.

Chris Wilder's departure from Bramall Lane came with the team bottom of the Premier League, and it seems incredibly unlikely they will make up the 19-point gap to 17th place.

  • Brewster is yet to score for his new side in 25 games, but regardless, Liverpool could still make a fair amount of money from him in the future.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Reds transfer chief Michael Edwards inserted a buy-back clause in the deal.

That means if Brewster rediscovers his form and becomes a target for a rival club, Liverpool could get there first and ensure any bid of their own is accepted.

As well as that, Liverpool opted to put in a 15 per-cent sell-on clause in the deal.

Depending on what happens in Brewster's career, that clause could be worth a significant amount or next to nothing.

It will expire if Brewster ever leaves Sheffield United on a free.
