Liverpool could sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for around £50million, according to reports. That would be half of the £100m that former Seagulls boss Graham Potter suggested the Ecuador international was worth.

Caicedo really burst onto the scene at Brighton in the second half of last season after returning from a loan spell at Beerschot. He has started all six Premier League games so far this term, helping his side reach fourth place in the table before the international break.

He was already catching the eye of some of England’s biggest clubs and has done himself no harm in that regard in recent weeks. Liverpool are set to be in the market for midfielders in the upcoming transfer windows.

Caicedo is said to be one of the players they are looking at. CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs claims the Reds’ interest in him dates back to his time at previous club Independiente del Valle.

Liverpool Jude Bellingham Transfer Problem

Liverpool were put off by high agent fees at the time, as were Manchester United. But Jacobs says offers are expected for Caicedo in January.

He claims Brighton would want at least £50m for the 20-year-old, whose contract at the Amex does not expire until 2025. But if Liverpool were able to seal a deal at that price, it would be some way off what Potter claimed would be a fair figure.

Liverpool were rumoured to be preparing a £42m bid in the summer. Potter joked at the time that would only be enough to buy Caicedo’s boots and suggested £100m could be what Brighton accept.

He said: “In football you never know, but we are quite calm and confident. You’d probably get his boots for that from the chairman – maybe! £100m? They can try.”

Potter was not surprised to hear of interest in Caicedo before he left to become Chelsea boss earlier this month. Caicedo is also linked with a move to Stamford Bridge to follow his old boss.

Potter said in August: “It doesn’t surprise me that people are looking at him because he is playing at a fantastic level. As soon as you do research on him you realise he is a top kid, great person, young, playing in the Premier League, has all the attributes to play at the very, very highest level.”
