Liverpool are in advanced talks to make Jorg Schmadtke their new sporting director and want him in place for the start of the summer transfer window.

It has long been a source of speculation over who will replace Julian Ward, the current incumbent, since he stated his intention to step down last November.

Liverpool had been linked with a number of candidates, including Paul Mitchell, who is currently with Monaco.

But Schmadtke, 59, a well-respected figure within German football, received a solid recommendation from manager Jurgen Klopp during discussions with club owners Fenway Sports Group and is now heading to the formalities of a contract.

There had been some suggestions that Schmadtke was being brought in on a consultancy basis, but that is not the case and it is expected he will sign a three-year contract that runs to June 2026 — the same month that Klopp’s deal runs out.

Klopp’s position at Anfield never needed strengthening, but this appointment is an indication of his influence within the club and Liverpool will now be confident they have an experienced administrator in place to complete the deals they need to reshape their squad.

Schmadtke, who last worked at Wolfsburg before leaving in January, will fit in alongside long-serving figures Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter on Liverpool’s technical team and the onus is on bringing in midfielders this summer.

Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister are prime candidates, along with Matheus Nunes of Wolves.

Liverpool have tracked Khephren Thuram — the son of French great Lilian — but are not expected to proceed with a deal.
