Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has clarified his comments on LeBron James’ potential role at the club after last week suggesting the NBA legend could be involved in management decisions. James recently became more heavily involved with the Reds’ owners FSG after becoming a minor partner last month, having been a part-owner of the Premier League side since 2011.

Werner last week raised eyebrows when he said he would be “surprised” if James and his business partner Maverick Carter didn’t “weigh in” on the day-to-day running of Liverpool and the Boston Red Sox, the baseball franchise also owned by FSG.

It led to speculation that the LA Lakers star could be involved in the reruitment strategy for Jurgen Klopp’s side – but Werner has now further explained his comments.

He described basketball great James as a “resource” for FSG, saying the four-time NBA champion could be on hand to help Reds stars carve out a psychological edge.

“He’s just going to be a resource for players and player psychology, he’s not going to be making any line-up decisions or anything like that,” Werner told WEEI, cited by the Liverpool Echo.

“LeBron and Maverick are smart people, they run a media company that is a juggernaut. They’ve got great relationships, from Nike to Disney to Amazon. They’ll be a resource as so many of our partners are.”

James is the third-highest scorer in NBA history, has won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award four times, and has also been named the NBA Finals MVP each time he has won the championship.

Last week, Werner said he would “welcome the thoughts” of both James and his business partner in management decisions for both Liverpool and the Red Sox.

“I will be surprised actually if they don’t weigh in (on management decisions of either team) – I would welcome their thoughts,” Werner told The Athletic.

“I consider Maverick to be one of my closest friends, and I’ve spent hours with him talking about strategy, coaching, the lessons that I’ve learned from Jurgen Klopp, and the lessons that he’s learned as an astute observer of basketball.

“We have a very collaborative relationship, so I would actually say that their wisdom and their experience is going to be hugely helpful to us going forward.”
