Liverpool transfer chief Michael Edwards is facing his biggest challenge in sealing a new contract for Mohamed Salah, according to reports. The outgoing sporting director has not managed to offer the star forward a fresh deal.
In the absence of new arrivals, Liverpool spent the summer agreeing renewed contracts with the core of their squad but Salah was not one.
Virgil van Dijk was rewarded for his return from injury with a new deal. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Jordan Henderson also put pen to paper.
Brazilian pair Alisson Becker and Fabinho were similarly handed extensions.
There was no new deal for Salah, who has been pivotal to their success under Jurgen Klopp. The Egyptian’s current contract expires in fewer than two years.
Some supporters have grown frustrated by the failure to offer the player renewed terms.

According to Goal, there has been no breakthrough in negotiations even though some Liverpool staff are quietly confident of an agreement being reached.
Edwards now faces one of his toughest challenges in his role less than a year before he reportedly quits.
To make matters even harder, none of Liverpool’s famous front three have been offered deals. Each of their contracts expire in 2023.

Salah and Sadio Mane, both 29, and Roberto Firmino, 30, have not extended their terms beyond the next two years, despite the haul of new contracts among the rest of the squad.
The triumvirate have been pivotal to the success under boss Jurgen Klopp, with a Premier League title and a Champions League acquired in the last two-and-a-half years.
Salah has reportedly grown frustrated by Liverpool’s delay in offering a new contract. He compares his own situation to that of Kevin De Bruyne, whose recent contract talks with Manchester City were smooth, according to The Athletic.
That is despite Salah being more available to Liverpool than De Bruyne has often been for City. The former Roma star has missed just five matches across the last two Premier League campaigns.
He has scored eight goals in all competitions this season, taking his overall Liverpool record to a staggering 133 goals in 211 appearances.
Reds boss Klopp recently refused to be drawn on commenting about Salah’s future.
“There’s nothing to say, especially from me, I am not involved,” the German said on September 23.
“Obviously I am interested in how sharp he looks. He’s spot on. Really good. Nothing else to say.”
