Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has cast doubt over Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield after insisting that football is “very changeable”.

The pair were team-mates for three years at Anfield and developed a close bond off the pitch, with Jurgen Klopp revealing the duo were best friends.

Lovren joined Zenit St Petersburg at the start of the season but remains in contact with Salah, whose own Liverpool future remains very uncertain.

Salah revealed earlier this month that ‘no-one’ is talking to him about a new contract and has refused to rule out a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Croatia defender Lovren knows his best mate will remain focused on trying to get Liverpool into next season’s Champions League but acknowledged there are no guarantees about his future.

"I cannot talk in his name about what his plans are but I think he's similar to me," he told Sky Sports.

"If he's focussed he's focussed there and he showed that with the goalscoring. You never know what can happen in football.

"I wish him all the best, I hope he wins lots of trophies at Liverpool but football can be quite changeable so let's see.

"We'll always be in contact, he's more than a friend. He knows he can call me whenever he wants and whatever he wants to talk about we are there for each other.

"Even if the club doesn't do that well it says a lot about his personal qualities."

Salah took his tally for the season to 22 with the opener against West Brom on Sunday to move level with wantaway Tottenham star Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

The 28-year-old has scored 125 goals in just 201 appearances since swapping Roma for Liverpool a £36.5million deal in June 2017.
