Lionel Messi’s reunion with Sergio Busquets in doubt after transfer development
Lionel Messi set for Inter Miami switch
Barcelona legend Lionel Messi’s reunion with Sergio Busquets in Miami might be off after a transfer development which could see the defensive midfielder move to Qatar. After agreeing to join Inter Miami this week Messi will be hoping that some former team-mates will join him to improve their lowly league position.
Midway through the season Inter Miami sit bottom of the Conference East with just five wins from 16 games. Despite their struggles Messi agreed to join David Beckham’s side after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain was allowed to expire at the end of the Ligue 1 season.
Barcelona captain Busquets would add some steel to the Miami midfield and the number five shirt is free for his taking. However, Football Espana have reported that the 34-year-old has ‘received a bold offer from a club in Qatar’ as clubs in the Middle East are clambering to sign the world’s best footballers.
Messi was reportedly offered a staggering £518million per year contract by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, but has instead chosen a move to America. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s move will attract commercial partners including Apple and Adidas.
The number 10 shirt – which Messi wore during his illustrious career at Barcelona – is currently free at Miami and is expected to be presented to him as a perfect gift. Also available is the number five shirt worn Busquets who is set to end an 18-year spell with the Catalan giants after opting not to sign a contract extension.
With money not an issue Messi elected against signing a staggering contract in Saudi Arabia after favouring the lifestyle in Miami – where he already owns a property. The World Cup winner could make his Inter Miami debut on July 21 against Mexican side Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.

Messi spent 17 years at Barcelona before making a controversial move to Paris Saint-Germain and there was interest from his boyhood club of a return. However, the World Cup winner said the manner of his Spanish exit contributed towards his decision.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo and Sport, Messi said: “I obviously really wanted to, very excited to be able to return, but, on the other hand, after having experienced what I experienced and the exit I had, I did not want to be in the same situation again – wait to see what would happen and leave my future in someone else’s hands, so to speak.
