After a career in Catalonia which boasted 672 goals in 778 games, ten La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey’s and four Champions Leagues, it appears Lionel Messi’s time on the east coast of Spain has come to an end. The tragic ending to his Barcelona career is enough to quite literally make a grown man cry.

It is not often that just one player can give inspiration to millions – if not billions – of aspiring young footballers.

The majority of that demographic likely only saw him weave his magic through their television screens, but the simple yet complex mesmerisation of the wing wizard captured the hearts of not just an entire generation, but possibly three.

Barcelona have fed off of his brilliance for years, winning trophy after trophy as Messi turned from prodigy, to superstar, to veteran.

Therefore, it almost seems cruel that the man who will forever remain Barcelona’s greatest ever player hasn’t received the send off he so greatly deserved.

The world will remember the career highs of the man considered by many to be the greatest ever player to live, for years to come.

However, for now, the sadness tinged with his departure has temporarily clouded over the memories the little Argentinian has given to millions of adoring fans.

JUST IN: Lionel Messi to PSG ‘done deal with medical scheduled’

It remains to be confirmed where his next move is, although media reports across the world are starting to tell stories of an impending move to Paris Saint-Germain.

It would be a great fit for the diminutive genius; with fellow countrymen Mauro Icardi, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes living in the French capital, alongside former team-mate and world star Neymar, Messi would instantly feel at home if he was to make the move.

However, Everton playmaker and ex-Real Madrid player James Rodriguez believes Messi should try his hand in Italy – and go toe-to-toe with perhaps the only other man billed with being the greatest player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking live on Twitch, the Colombian hopes that Messi ends up in Turin, just to see the two superstars play together.

“Messi should go to Juventus and play with Cristiano Ronaldo, it would be a bomb,” he said. “It’s the dream of many fans to see those two play together.

“Messi made 30 goals and 30 assists for Barcelona, per year, at least, and now Barcelona will have to look for other players to do that. One who scores 10 and assists 10, another who scores five and assists five, the issue is finding them.

“Football has changed a lot, Messi leaving Barcelona confirms that. Who would have imagined that he would leave Barcelona or that Sergio Ramos would leave Real Madrid?

“The La Liga Clasicos are going to be different, before the cameras were for Cristiano and Messi, now people will still watch but it won’t be the same.

“If Messi went to PSG they would play alone there, they could already give them all the titles, In England I don’t think anyone can pay him, only Manchester City.”

It would be an extremely interesting proposition should Messi move to Turin, given that Ronaldo is still their star man.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have worries of their own, with new striker Sergio Aguero being ruled out for ten weeks with a calf injury.
