Lionel Messi ‘close to record-breaking Inter Miami move’ thanks to David Beckham

Lionel Messi looks set to become the highest paid player in MLS history as he nears a move to Inter Miami thanks to both David Beckham and his property interests.

The 35-year-old, who is currently in the running for the World Cup Golden Boot thanks to his two goals for Argentina, is set to leave PSG for the United States in the summer.

Inter Miami, who are co-owned by Beckham and managed by Phil Neville, are confident of benefiting from Messi's dream move while boosting their own hopes of silverware.

The Times report that Inter Miami expect Messi to leave PSG at the end of the current Ligue 1 season, with the Barcelona icon having a home in Miami.

Messi also told Spanish media last year that he has dreamed of playing football in the United States following his two-year spell in France.

The report adds that the influence of Beckham, who has come under fire for his ambassadorial role at the Qatar World Cup, is key due to his relationship with PSG owners.

Messi and Beckham have also met through their respective deals with Adidas, as well as Beckham meeting members of the PSG squad in the summer, where he finished his career.

The current contract of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is thought to be worth an astonishing £1.2million-per-week, but expires in the summer.

Messi's arrival in the US could well coincide with preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will also be held across Mexico and Canada.

Messi, who has three sons with childhood sweetheart wife Antonela Roccuzzo, is believed to have purchased a £5m Miami apartment last year.

Long before his ongoing attempt to win the World Cup with Argentina at the fifth attempt, Messi said: "I would like to play in the United States and experience life and the league there, but ultimately come back to Barcelona in some capacity."

Having scored a penalty in their defeat to Saudi Arabia, Messi scored the opener against Mexico to give Lionel Scaloni's side a good chance at reaching the knockout stages.
