BBC pundit Gary Lineker took a sly dig at rivals broadcasters ITV in the aftermath of England’s win over Wales.

Lineker was part of the punditry team that presented the Three Lions’ crucial clash against Wales, where Gareth Southgate’s side emerged victorious after a 3-0 win.

And when announcing the details for England’s next fixture – a round of 16 encounter with Senegal on Sunday – the pundit couldn’t help but poke fun at an unfortunate statistic that ITV hold.

BBC pundit Gary Lineker poked fun at England’s next game being shown on ITV

The Three Lions booked their place in the round of 16 after beating Wales 3-0 on Tuesday

Speaking after England’s final group game, Lineker said: ‘England finished top and will take on Senegal at 7pm on Sunday.

‘And that’s on live on, well – uh – ITV. Oh well.’

The comment refers to a recent statistic that showed the Three Lions have an appalling record when broadcast on the BBC’s rival channel.

England have played 31 matches in World Cup history, with 16 going to the BBC and 15 going to ITV.

They’ve won 12 of their matches shown on the nation’s primary broadcaster – a 75 per cent win rate – compared to just two wins from their ITV appearances.

The Three Lions were held to a 0-0 draw in their only appearance on ITV at this World Cup

The worrying statistic has been continuing in trend during the Qatar World Cup, with England failing to win in their one match shown on ITV – a 0-0 draw with the USA.

In comparison, they’ve won both matches – against Iran and Wales – when shown on BBC One this year.

As Lineker made clear, England’s next game will be shown on ITV. It’ll be their crucial round of 16 tie with Senegal – who qualified second from Group A in dramatic fashion.

Gareth Southgate’s side will face Senegal in the knockout stage of the tournament on Sunday

Gareth Southgate’s side secured their place in the knockout round of the Qatar World Cup after a convincing 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday night.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford stole the show with a brilliant second-half brace, with his goals coming either side of Phil Foden’s back-post tap-in.

They’ll now face Aliou Cisse’s Senegal on Sunday in the first encounter ever between the two nations on the international football stage.

Meanwhile, Wales have been sent home from their first World Cup since 1958 after finishing bottom of Group B with one point.

England will be looking to go one further than their semi-final exit during Russia 2018
