Legendary boss Sir Alex used ‘strange’ tactic whenever Man Utd played Arsenal

Arsenal and Manchester United are ready to renew their storied rivalry on Sunday afternoon.

The two old rivals aren't quite at the height of their power: as they were under Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger in the early 2000s. And Wayne Rooney has revealed a 'strange' method Sir Alex used to employ for the clash.

Rooney wrote in his column for The Times: "Arsenal was the one game where Sir Alex Ferguson let the opposition take the initiative. They would have possession – there was nothing we could do about that – we’d sit in a mid-block, close spaces, be hard to play through and hit them on the break.

"Most of the goals we – and I – scored against them came that way. It’s strange because we didn’t work that much on those games tactically. It was like the players knew when we played Arsenal how games would pan out and how we had to play to beat them."

Rooney has been the bane of Arsenal since he burst onto the scene in 2004, when 16-year-old Rooney slammed the ball home to end the Gunners' unbeaten run.

He also bagged a hat-trick in the infamous 8-2 fixture in 2011.

Times have changed significantly for both clubs since those days, but both sides appear to be on the up this season.

Arsenal currently sit at the top of the table, while United are finally starting to find their feet under new boss Erik ten Hag.
