Leeds 'approach to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan'

Leeds ‘approach to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan, and are vying with Crystal Palace for the 21-year-old’s signature after his impressive loan at West Brom’

  • England U21 Gallagher enjoyed a successful loan at the Midlands side last year
  • Palace and Newcastle are also keen to sign Gallagher on a temporary transfer
  • Chelsea do not want to sell him as they view him as part of their long-term plans
  • But his first-team prospects are slim this season, so they could sanction a loan

Leeds have reportedly approached to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan for the upcoming Premier League season.

The 21-year-old impressed on loan at relegated West Bromwich Albion in the top-flight last year after successful spells at Charlton and Swansea in the Championship.

And according to the Athletic, Marcelo Bielsa’s side want to sign the England U21 international to strengthen their midfield options.

The England U21 international enjoyed a strong loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season

The Yorkshire club signed promising midfielder Lewis Bate, 18, from Stamford Bridge for £1.2million on Thursday for their U23 team and want Gallagher to follow the same path.

However, with a central midfielder understood to be their top priority in the transfer market, Gallagher would move straight into the senior team and compete for a midfield spot alongside the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas.

They have reportedly kept tabs on Gallagher over the summer and are thought to have already pitched him the benefits of the move.

However, fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace and Newcastle are also vying for his signature.

He is training with the Blues, who view him as part of their long-term midfield plans, given the ages of Jorginho (29) and N’Golo Kante (30), and so are unwilling to sanction a permanent sale.

However, with his prospects of first-team football this season slim, Thomas Tuchel’s side are likely to allow him a loan to play regularly and get more Premier League experience – like they did with Billy Gilmour, 20, who has joined Norwich on loan.
