LaLiga chief claims that Barcelona CAN'T afford to sign Lewandowski
LaLiga chief Javier Tebas claims that Barcelona CAN’T afford to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich this summer, despite the Catalan giants ‘agreeing a three-year contract’ with the Poland striker
- Barcelona are keen to sign striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich
- Lewandowski said he might have played his last game for the German giants
- However, the 33-year-old Polish international has one year left on his contract
- LaLiga chief Javier Tebas has doubts over whether Barcelona can afford him
LaLiga president Javier Tebas has reportedly shut down speculation that Robert Lewandowski could join Barcelona this summer.
Speaking to Spanish publication Marca, Tebas claims that the Catalan side’s financial situation in recent years could scupper their plans of signing the striker from Bayern Munich.
Xavi is determined to bring the 33-year-old to the Nou Camp and Lewandowski, who sees his contract at Bayern expire at the end of next season, has told the club that he won’t be signing a new extension in hope of joining the LaLiga side.

Tebas (pictured) says Lewandowski’s wages and transfer fee could prove problematic
Tebas said: ‘The numbers are very easy, you have over €500m losses in the last two years, you have to recover that to sign players.
‘Lewandowski has a year left at Bayern, between what he wants to earn and what Bayern want as a fee, I don’t see him at Barcelona.’
Tebas was also asked whether the potential sale of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, could help them in their quest to sign Lewandowski.
The Dutch midfielder has been linked with a move away from the club, with Manchester United said to be interested.
Xavi is determined to sign Lewandowski to strengthen his squad during the summer window
When asked if a De Jong sale could fund Lewandowski, Tebas said: ‘It could be enough depending on how much you sell for and depending on what Lewandowski costs. It could be €100m plus that is saved.
‘De Jong could give them that possibility, but I don’t know if they are even planning to sell. To date they have not sold him.’
The Polish international started and scored in his side’s 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg last week, taking his tally to 344 goals in 374 appearance for Bayern.
Following the game, he revealed that he had told the German champions he will not be signing a new deal, opening up the possibility that he departs the Allianz Arena this summer.
‘I can confirm that I spoke with Hasan (Salihamidžić) and informed him that my decision had been made and I would not be extending my contract with FC Bayern,’ Lewandowski told reporters.
Lewandowski seemingly waved goodbye to Bayern Munich fans after their last game
‘It’s very possible that this was my last game for Bayern. I cannot say that at 100%, but it may have been [my last game].
‘We want to find the best solution for me and for the club’.
Lewandowski waved to the travelling fans after the draw at Wolfsburg, seemingly offering a further sign that his time at Bayern has come to an end.
Barcelona are leading the race to land the prolific striker, with it previously being reported that Lewandowski has made contact with Xavi about a potential move to the Nou Camp.
Romano is claiming that a three-year contract has also been discussed, with the plan to sign Lewandowski and make him the man to lead the line for Barcelona being ‘clear’.
Barcelona might have to sell players including Frenkie de Jong so they can afford Lewandowski
The report also claims that it’s now up to Bayern and a cash-strapped Barcelona to thrash out a deal to make it happen.
It’s said that a move for Lewandowski could cost Barcelona at least €45million (£38m) up-front.
It was Barcelona’s financial situation that led to them losing Lionel Messi last summer, due to league rules on 70% of club revenues accounting for salaries, and the club’s mounting debts forced a parting of ways.
There have been further exits but also new additions with Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joining during the January transfer window.
Barcelona have been linked with a number of players to potentially sign in the upcoming summer window, with Chelsea trio Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta all linked with the Spanish giants.
