Kyle Walker likens in-form Ilkay Gundogan to Real Madrid legend
‘He turns into prime Zidane!’: Kyle Walker jokes in-form Ilkay Gundogan saves his best for the end of the season… with Man City star hitting four goals in last two league games to boost Treble bid
- Ilkay Gundogan is standing tall in the run-in as a crucial player for Man City
- The German midfielder has struck four goals in his last two league matches
- Kyle Walker has been nicknaming his team-mate after an iconic Real Madrid star
Kyle Walker has slipped into the role of Ilkay Gundogan’s hype man after likening the in-form midfielder to prime Zinedine Zidane.
Gundogan is the in-form player in this Treble-chasing Man City team right now with four goals from his last two Premier League games.
For Walker, it has become a running joke that Gundogan transforms into prime Zidane when the season is in the crunch.
‘I’ve seen a few tweets and been joking with Gundo that he turns into prime Zidane in the last few months,’ Walker said on Tuesday.
‘Sometimes you have to shine, and he does it at the business end of the season.’

Zidane is widely viewed as one of the finest midfielders of his generation and it is high praise indeed to compare Gundogan to the iconic Frenchman.
Walker will want to see Gundogan keep his fine form going ahead of a reunion with Real Madrid for the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
The first leg ended level at 1-1 – Gundogan got the assist for Kevin De Bruyne’s equaliser – and there is all to play for back in Manchester, with both finely poised to reach the final in Istanbul.
Walker has faced plenty of disappointment in Europe with City and he did little to play down the importance of winning it to City.
‘The club is missing that one, the owners the amount of money they’ve invested, we owe it to them,’ he said.

‘The final vs Chelsea, not performing as we can, we owe it to ourselves.
‘We’ve got a tough opponent tomorrow to get to the final, then it’s a final, anything can happen.
‘AC and Inter are massive clubs. We’ll watch that game and study it hard but the first thing is getting to the final.’
City take on European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium.
