Watford fans aimed teasing chants towards West Ham United defender Kurt Zouma during Tuesday night’s Premier League clash. The two sides played out a goalless draw in the first half at the London Stadium in a match shrouded by a recently-emerged video of Zouma abusing his pet cat.

Telegraph columnist Jim White is present at the clash and has reported a chant aimed at the 27-year-old after going down injured during the first period.

After going to the ground from a kick, Watford fans chanted “that’s how your cat feels” towards the hurt West Ham star.

It comes after Zouma was filmed by his brother, Yoan, dropping, kicking, slapping, chasing and throwing shoes at a cat in the kitchen of his £2million mansion.

The Snapchat videos were captioned ‘it is starting’ and accompanied by several laughing emojis as he performed the cruel acts on his pet Bengal.

West Ham boss David Moyes’ decision to start Zouma just 24 hours after the videos surfaced online came as a shock to the public and animal rights campaigners.

But Moyes defended his call before kick-off, labelling the Frenchman as one of his better players.

He said: “No [the video didn’t influence my team selection], because he is one of our better players.

“But it is certainly ongoing and the club are dealing with it, so that is a separate matter.”

Internal investigations are ongoing regarding Zouma’s actions, though, and Essex Police are liaising with the RSPCA.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of a video circulating on social media relating to an incident involving a cat which members of our communities may find distressing.

“We have recently been made aware that this incident may have taken place in Essex and we are liaising with the RSPCA and urgent enquiries are ongoing.”
