Kieran Trippier has arrived in Newcastle ahead of his proposed £12million move back to the Premier League.

The 31-year-old left Madrid on Wednesday morning, having missed training with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, and touched down at Newcastle airport just before 1pm.

He later arrived at the club’s training ground for his medical and, all being well, could be unveiled as early as Wednesday afternoon.

The England international is set to be the first signing at Newcastle since the Saudi-backed takeover was completed in October.

Newcastle began negotiations on the deal in December, with Trippier making it plain to Diego Simeone and the powers that be at Atletico that he wished to return to England.

The former Spurs defender wants to be closer to his family and is keen on working with Eddie Howe, the Newcastle boss who first signed him for Burnley nearly 10 years ago.

It is a statement of intent from the club’s new backers, with Trippier set to be the first current England international to play for Newcastle since Andy Carroll in 2010.

Trippier has 35 caps and was a key member of Gareth Southgate’s squad that reached the Euro 2020 final last year.

The move will see him link up once more with Eddie Howe. The Magpies boss signed Trippier while manager of Burnley in July 2011.

The signing is anticipated to be the first of many throughout the month at St James’ Park, with Howe also keen to add quality in key positions.

The next priority is understood to be a centre back, with Lille’s Sven Botman the prime target. More additions in defence and a centre forward are also thought to be key targets before the window shuts.
