Keylor Navas set to leave PSG as club stands by Gianluigi Donnarumma
PSG ‘will show Keylor Navas the exit this summer after deciding to keep Gianluigi Donnarumma as their No 1’… just days after the Costa Rican star admitted the club’s goalkeeping situation ‘has to change’
- PSG have rotated between Gianluigi Donnarumma and Keylor Navas this term
- They have decided to keep hold of Donnarumma heading into next season
- As a result, Navas is set to leave, bringing an end to this rotation policy
- Navas recently stated that he wanted to be playing regular first-team football
PSG have decided to keep faith with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as Keylor Navas is expected to leave the club this summer, according to reports.
Navas has spent the last three seasons at the Ligue 1 giants, and was the team’s undisputed first-choice shot-stopper in his first two campaigns.
However, PSG opted to sign Donnarumma on a free transfer after his contract at AC Milan expired last summer, and this has led to a battle between the duo for the No. 1 spot this term.
Gianluigi Donnarumma looks set to stay and become PSG’s undisputed No. 1 next season
Meanwhile, Keylor Navas is likely to leave the club in the next transfer window
Mauricio Pochettino has rotated between the two goalkeepers throughout this season
It now seems Donnarumma will finally get the chance to establish himself in the team on a consistent basis, as L’Equipe have reported, via Get French Football News, that he is set to stay next season, while Navas will be offloaded in the next transfer window.
It is understood that PSG have realised that rotating Donnarumma and Navas is no longer sustainable, meaning the latter will depart in the coming months, despite having two years left on his contract.
Navas started this season above Donnarumma in the pecking order for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as he got the nod in each of PSG’s opening four league fixtures.
He has gone on to make 18 appearances to Donnarumma’s 15 in Ligue 1, with PSG on the brink of claiming another French title.
Donnarumma made a costly error against Real Madrid, but PSG look set to keep hold of him
However, Donnarumma was slightly preferred in Europe, starting both matches of the team’s last-16 Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The Euro 2020 winner made a high-profile error in the second leg at the Bernabeu as he was caught in possession by Karim Benzema, leading to the forward scoring, which kick-started Real Madrid’s dramatic comeback and knocked PSG out of the competition.
In the aftermath of that game, the 23-year-old was linked with a return to Serie A.
He now looks set to stay put, though, while Navas will need to find another club.
Navas recently spoke out about the current goalkeeping situation at PSG, saying: ‘I have a very good relationship with Gigio, but I want to be playing every game. I’m happy in Paris, but that has to change.’
The Costa Rican appears likely to get his wish in the coming months as he could look to cement his place as a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere.
