Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish has given his thoughts on fellow Reds legend Steven Gerrard and his links with the soon-to-be vacant Newcastle United manager’s job. Steve Bruce still sits in the hotseat at St James’ Park, but with an ambitious Saudi-led consortium now at the helm, a marquee acquisition in the dugout looks like their chosen route to get things started with a bang on Tyneside.

Newcastle are linked with the likes of Antonio Conte, Brendan Rodgers and Gerrard himself in an attempt to take the club to the next level.

The former Liverpool midfielder has done a superb job north of the border, and has been tipped as a future Reds manager once Jurgen Klopp departs.

There had been debate on whether he could use the experience of a ‘stepping stone’ club before taking the reins at Anfield, however, and the Magpies could provide an exciting backdrop for that.

Naturally, their ambitious new owners would hate to think of themselves as a stepping stone, but success will be a work in progress rather than instantaneous.

Gerrard has certainly shown enough at Rangers to suggest he would be a hit at St James’ Park, but Dalglish, who was also a highly-esteemed manager with the likes of Blackburn and Liverpool, has explained the 41-year-old’s thought process.

“The Toon Army are excited about the future, and there is a real feeling of optimism after the way things were for a number of years under the previous owner, Mike Ashley,” he wrote in The Sunday Post.

“Will they have Steven Gerrard in the dugout? He has been fantastic for Rangers.

“He won their first SPFL Premiership title for 10 years in a crucial season, given Celtic were going for 10-in-a-row.

“He also made some huge strides in European competition. That is why he is being linked with Newcastle United.

“Right now, though, Steven will not be paying any attention to what is going on at St James’ Park.

“His only focus will be on Rangers and Saturday’s massive game at home to Hearts.

“They defeated Hibs at Ibrox last week, and there will be a real determination to do the double over the Edinburgh clubs, who have both started the season well.”

Rangers have started the season well, but Hearts trail them by just a single point as Celtic continue to lag behind in the SPL.

Abandoning his post mid-season may not be ideal for Gerrard given the adoration he has earned from Rangers fans, but a chance like this will not come along often.

That being said, it will be far from a standard managerial position on Tyneside, with almost endless money to spend and a relentless pressure on advancing up the table.

Dalglish seems to think that Gerrard will not be losing any sleep over the Newcastle links, but the truth is only known by the former England captain who could soon find himself in a Premier League hotseat.
