Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Naby Keita will be ‘out for a while’ after he picked up a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw with Brighton – but confirmed that Thiago and Fabinho were ready to return for Atletico Madrid’s visit on Wednesday.

Keita was forced off after just 19 minutes after picking up the muscle injury and is now set for another spell on the sidelines.

The midfielder had just recovered from Paul Pogba’s two-footed lunge the week before to feature for the Seagulls’ visit to Anfield on Saturday but Klopp has revealed that he will now be without Keita for the forseeable.

Klopp provided reporters with an injury update on Keita and the rest of his Liverpool squad

‘Naby has a hamstring injury so he will be out for a while,’ Klopp told reporters in his Tuesday press conference.

However, the Liverpool boss has been handed a double boost for Atletico’s visit to Anfield on Wednesday, with Fabinho and Thiago both in line to feature in the Champions League clash.

Klopp added: ‘Milner [is out]. Thiago and Fabinho trained normal and are in contention, which is helpful.’

However, Klopp has revealed that Thiago (left picture, front) and Fabinho (right) are ‘in contention’ to face Atletico Madrid on Wednesday

Thiago has been out of action since Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on September 18, after he picked up a calf injury, while Fabinho has missed the last couple of games for Liverpool after picking up a knock to his knee in the 3-2 win over Atletico the last time the two sides met last month.

Klopp also said he should not expect a post-match handshake from Diego Simeone on Wednesday as the Atletico boss believes they are ‘false’.

After his side’s 3-2 win over Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano a fortnight ago, the Reds boss could only watch on as his opposite number darted down the tunnel at the final whistle without any acknowledgement.

Klopp was initially annoyed but later played down any long-lasting tension – but Simeone has said post-match pleasantries are just not something he wants to be involved in.

‘I don’t like the greeting after the match because they are the emotions of two sides in different emotional minds,’ he said.

‘I know in the UK it is a custom but I don’t share it and I don’t like the falseness it may include.

‘I don’t know Klopp as a person very well but I know he is a great coach who has done great work at every club he has been at.’
