Keane and Cole disagree on Edinson Cavani’s new Man Utd contract
Roy Keane and Andy Cole have disagreed over whether or not to hand Edinson Cavani a new contract at Manchester United.
The Uruguay international will see his deal expire at the end of the season after penning a one-year contract last year.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate for the striker to stay for at least one more campaign after some fine form in recent weeks.
Cavani will be free to leave in the summer if an agreement is not reached with Boca Juniors keen on his signature.
However, it now appears that the former Paris Saint-Germain star will extend his time at Old Trafford.
It comes after a blitzing period in front goal with five in his last five appearances, as well as two assists.
But Keane does not believe Cavani should be awarded a new contract, a viewpoint Cole vehemently disagrees with.
“I kind of hope in one sense they don’t keep [Cavani],” Keane said.
“Because then they might look at it and go, ‘We don’t need to go out and get another striker’. It might be an easy way out.
“He’s 34. If you’re hanging your hat on Cavani next year to get United back to winning league titles, forget about it.
“He’d be a back-up striker, and he wouldn’t want to be a back-up striker. That’s why he’s reluctant to sign a new contract. And obviously his family reasons behind it.”
However, Cole has already given his thoughts, saying on Sky Sports: "I’d be really happy to see him stay. If you look at his performances for Manchester United so far they have been brilliant.
"At 34, you see the goals he’s getting and when he does play Manchester United have that pivotal man up front.
"They know they can play through him with his hold-up play. Watch the goal he got in midweek against Roma, his link-up play there was fantastic with how he slipped Bruno [Fernandes] in.
"This for me personally shows that Manchester United need an out-and-out No.9 and if he stays I think it would be great for the club."
