They say you never appreciate what you’ve got until it’s gone, and the longer his remarkable career continues the more you get the sense that may well be the case with Harry Kane. The England captain, now just seven months shy of his 30s, still somehow does not seem to get the love he deserves from fans outside of Tottenham, and it is baffling how much some appear to relish mocking the forward.

On the pitch, Kane has quietly enjoyed yet another remarkable year. Sure, he may no longer be the all-action No.9 we remember him as. But his development into a deep-lying creative force has been a joy to witness, and other than Kevin De Bruyne you’d struggle to argue there is a better passer in the country.

Oh, and 12 goals in 15 Premier League appearances so far this season isn’t bad either.

However, it is arguably off the pitch where Kane has impressed even more recently. He quickly put behind the disappointment of missing out on a dream move to Manchester City without throwing his toys out of the pram and acting like a primma donna (take note, Cristiano).

Instead, he was the model professional as he acted with dignity and grace to simply get on with his job. Kane also continues to act as a role model for youngsters all around the world, and recently launched a hugely important campaign focusing on mental health.

He may not possess the quick wit or charm of Three Lions teammates such as Declan Rice or Jack Grealish, but it is striking just how highly everybody who comes across Kane speaks of him – which makes the abuse from rival supporters all the more inexplicable.

Of course, he knows the one way to silence them will be to finally win that elusive trophy he is lacking – and doing so at the World Cup would be one hell of a way to finally lift the curse.

Fans’ Footballer of the Year

But even if he doesn’t, Kane will certainly finish his career as England’s top scorer, and it would be no surprise to also see him break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record providing he can stay fit towards the tail end of his career.

When he does finally hang up his boots, maybe he will at last get the credit he deserves for being one of the greatest players this nation has ever seen. But until then, at the very least he deserves the Reach Fans’ Footballer of the year award.
