Kai Havertz ‘upset’ over Arsenal transfer leak as he pens letter to Chelsea fans

In a show of class on his way out of the Chelsea exit, Kai Havertz has detailed how upset he was to find out his transfer to London rivals Arsenal had been leaked.

Havertz, 24, officially became an Arsenal player on Wednesday after the club confirmed his £65million arrival from Stamford Bridge. However, fans all but knew the move was only a matter of time after footage was leaked of him being interviewed for the Gunners' official channels.

That came after photos of the star wearing an Arsenal shirt were circulated around social media. And Havertz was eager to set the record straight with those he was leaving at Chelsea, saying the Blues will 'forever be in his heart.'

"I would have preferred for you to hear my thoughts on leaving Chelsea first from myself before my thoughts on me joining my new team," he wrote on Instagram. "This isn’t my style and it upsets me that you had to hear of it in this way.

"Today, I find myself at a crossroads, where words can’t describe the emotions I’m feeling. It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter, saying goodbye to the club that has become my second home, and to the incredible fans who have supported me throughout this amazing journey.

"Together, we have experienced the highs and lows, the joys and heartaches. Today I want to thank each and every Chelsea supporter, member of staff, coaches and my team mates for the last years. Joining Chelsea three years ago was a big moment in my life and I’m looking back on these years with nothing but pride, gratefulness and loads of sporting success."

The move works out well for both parties considering even Havertz couldn't inspire Chelsea to the heights they'd expect last season. He's the latest in a string of high-profile departures from Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea desperate to balance their books in order to fall in line with Financial Fair Play laws.

In return, Arsenal get a young player who could do well under Mikel Arteta's guidance, having been played largely out of position in west London. Chelsea fans will remember the Germany international in particular for his 1-0 decider against Manchester City in the 2021 Champions League final.

It was a downward trajectory for everyone at Chelsea following that triumph, with the club slipping to 12th in the Premier League standings last term. Nonetheless, Havertz had nothing but positive things to say of his time at the club.

"From winning the Champions League in my first season to winning the Super Cup and the Club World Cup and now saying goodbye has been quite a journey that I will never forget," he continued in his open letter.

"Every second of my time at Chelsea I identified with what it means to represent the club on and off the pitch and I hope that everyone remembers me for this. I’m looking back at memories that last a lifetime. The club will be forever in my heart and I made friends for life."

The former Bayer Leverkusen prospect departs Chelsea with a return of 32 goals and 15 assists from 139 appearances. The Gunners are hoping he'll exceed those figures at the Emirates Stadium, having lost five of his six appearances against Arsenal since arriving in England.

Havertz signed off his open letter by telling the Chelsea faithful it was 'an honour to be part of their history', even if that includes some moments the club would sooner forget.
